Commonwealth Assembly (Founded 2022)
The Commonwealth Assembly honors the men and women whose ancestors helped shape the first representative government in English America. Rooted in Virginia’s early civic history, the Assembly recognizes those who served the colony between 30 July 1619 and 10 June 1776 in key governmental roles, including Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor General, Receiver General, Treasurer, Attorney General, Surveyor General, Councillor, and Burgess. Our purpose is to preserve this legacy, celebrate the individuals who guided Virginia’s early political development, and bring together descendants who share a commitment to honoring this foundational chapter of American self‑governance.
Our Emblem & Colors
The emblem of the Commonwealth Assembly features the Chesapecten Jeffersonius, the official state fossil of Virginia. In 1687, Martin Lister published a drawing of this scallop, making it the first North American fossil ever illustrated in scientific literature. The species name, Jeffersonius, honors Thomas Jefferson for his contributions as an early American natural historian.
The Assembly’s colors — red, green, and white — symbolize cherished elements of Virginia’s natural and cultural heritage:
-Red for the vibrant cardinal
-Green for the historic tobacco plant
-White for the iconic dogwood blossom
Together, these colors reflect the Commonwealth’s enduring beauty and its deep historical roots.
